Public Entity Saba supports progress and clarifies current improvements at Sacred Heart School

In light of the Education Inspectorate's report from November 2024, which was published in March 2025, Public Entity Saba wishes to provide an update and clarification regarding the current state of improvements at the Sacred Heart School (SHS). The report initially highlighted past challenges, which do not reflect the ongoing positive transformations and substantial progress made by the school under the guidance of the current board.

Active Measures and Continuous Improvement:

  1. Enhanced Safety Protocols: Significant steps include the appointment of a Safety Coordinator in January 2025 and the implementation of more rigorous supervision during breaks. These measures have effectively increased the security and safety of all students.
  2. Educational Quality Enhancements: The recruitment of highly qualified new teachers has strengthened the educational offerings and positively impacted the learning environment.
  3. Governance Structure Updates: Adhering to the Ministry of OCW's requirements, the school board has modernized its statutes and established a two-tier governance structure, which will be officially in place by June 2025.
  4. Transparent and Collaborative Efforts: The SKO Saba board maintains a robust partnership with Public Entity Saba and the Ministry of OCW, ensuring transparency through monthly progress reports detailing the school's advances.

Public Entity Saba recognizes the potential for confusion due to the delayed release of the inspectorate's findings. It is crucial to note that the reported issues were historical and that the current status of SHS reflects a marked improvement, driven by the concerted efforts of its board and the supportive oversight of the Public Entity Saba.

"We fully support this new current board's commitment to overcoming past challenges and commend its dedication to creating a safe and enriching learning environment," stated Eviton Heyliger, commissioner of the social domain and education. "We stand firmly behind the board as it continues to implement effective strategies that have already begun to transform the educational experience at SHS."
