Quick Scan into the Cost of Living in Progress

This week, representatives from Amsterdam Bureau for Economics visited various organizations and businesses on Saba, as part of the quick scan, which was requested by the Saba Government, to determine the driving factors into the high cost of living on the island. The research is being conducted with support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Over the past few days, the researchers met with various stakeholders that play an important role in the importation of goods to the island. The visit began on Monday, October 28th, with a meeting with the Commissioner of Finance and Economic Affairs, Bruce Zagers.

Additional meetings held included supermarket owners, hardware store owners, customs, brokers, business association, transporters and transport agents.

As part of the research, a broad analysis into what drives the costs contributing to the increased prices associated with imported goods and services will be conducted. This includes looking into different factors within the supply chain, such as supplier prices and shipping rates, and how these have an impact on how prices are set. The final report will provide recommendations with short-term and long-term measures that can be taken by all involved stakeholders (Public Entity Saba, the Dutch Government and the private sector) to reduce the cost of living .

This quick scan forms part of the Saba Package Agreement (2023 – 2027) where both the PES and Dutch government committed to finding ways to understand and mitigate the costs of living and doing business, by investigating the forces behind the rising costs, especially when importing goods from abroad.

“This is an important step in addressing the increasing cost of living as we have witnessed over the past years. This research will assist us in working towards structural solutions that will hopefully lower costs, especially with regards to doing business,” stated Commissioner Zagers.

By the end of this year, the finalized report will be published and made available to the public.
