International Day of Forest Community Outplanting Event

The Public Entity’s reforestation project invites members of the community to take part in a special tree planting event in honor of the International Day of Forests (IDF).

While IDF is observed on March 21st, the tree planting event will take place on March 29th at the designated reforestation site in Thais Hill, highlighting the importance of restoring and preserving Saba’s natural landscape.

As part of the celebrations on March 21st, the public is also invited to join Treevia Night, an engaging and educational trivia night about trees, organized in collaboration with Sea & Learn.

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 21st the International Day of Forests to raise awareness on the importance of forests. This year’s theme is “forests and foods,” highlighting the crucial roles that forests play in the food we eat, the nutrition we get from this food and how they contribute to our livelihoods.

On each International Day of Forests, countries around the world are encouraged to organize activities involving forests and trees, specifically.  As such, the reforestation project would like to have members of the community be a part of its reforestation efforts. Given this year’s theme, there will be a focus on planting native and naturalized fruit-bearing tree species, such as mango, genip, soursop and lemon.

The outplanting of these and other tree species will take place at the Public Entity’s and Saba Conservation Foundation’s reforestation site in Thais Hill.

Due to limited parking, a shuttle service will be provided to and from the site. Participants are encouraged to use this service or arrange alternative transportation to avoid congestion on the road. A shuttle schedule will be shared in a separate post.

We also encourage participants to wear sunblock and hats for protection against the sun and heat. Drinks will be provided. We hope to see you there!
